Insurance Accounting Specialist
Location: Houston, TX
Job Functions
Duties include: entering insurance data and maintaining commissions and marketing database; collecting outstanding commissions from carriers; preparing third-party commission and/or marketing fee reports; preparing check requests; resolving differences; questions and issues with insurance carriers; reconciling selected balance sheet accounts; performing analyses and drafting and distributing communications and other documentation. Position involves preparing selected monthly journal entries and responding to management and audit inquiries.
Essential responsibilities:
- Enter commissions’ data and maintain accuracy and completeness of third-party commissions and marketing fees database and spreadsheets using information provided by various parties.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports for third parties, including check requests for derived payments to same third parties.
- Resolve issues and questions with insurance carriers regarding commissions.
- Reconcile commissions per database to commission per bank statement.
- Record bank service charges for Empyrean Insurance Services, Inc. (“EIS”)
- Maintain insurance bonus/override plan details by insurance carrier and propose business opportunities to increase bonuses and/or overrides.
- Reconcile third party data (e.g. TAG transactions) for customer billings (COBRA, FSA, retiree) to bank statements and verify submitted ACH/wire transfer requests payable to customers for amounts processed and collected on their behalf.
- Prepare selected monthly journal entries, reconcile selected balance sheet accounts and maintain accounting files and documentation.
- Review and assist in updating commissions and marketing fee database and other internal processes.
- Analyze data and prepare analyses and accounting/financial reports for management and other parties.
- Match disbursement advices to invoices and file.
- Recommend and execute process improvements.
- Prepare, review and deliver a variety of financial reports and other internal documentation and external communications.
- Assist in preparation of annual budgets based upon database information and other analyses.
- Participate in special projects, including preparation of year end audit work papers.
Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Prior basic, general accounting experience (minimum of 2 years preferred)
- Proficient with analysis and mathematical equations
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel pivot tables and reports, including prior experience with the application of pivot tables and reports
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access a plus
- Self-motivated individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- High level of proficiency with English language
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively in a multi-tasking environment
